  1. Napoleon was initially exiled to Elba, which is in the Med. He escaped, but was quickly captured and exiled for good to the middle of nowhere (St Helena). So was that Tristan da Cunha? If so, St Helena is one of the closest points, but it's over a 1000 miles north. I always think of Capetown as so far south, but if you look on the map, the northern hemisphere equivalent latitude is northern Alabama.

  3. On a serious note, be extra careful in South Africa. There's a lot of petty crime. Stay with your group. You don't want to be the lone zebra that lingers by the watering hole. I read of one couple that got mugged 1 block from their hotel in Durban.
